Remembering ©

Sometimes we have to stop to remember that while we sleep in our warm beds there are those who surrender the safety of their families, homes and yes, even beds so that we can have the warmth and freedom we enjoy today.
For some they trade their cold beds for a even colder grave.
They have a thankless duty with their families as their only fans for a task few of us would take on.
We go on with our daily lives while they dance with the devil on some far off unfriendly land where others are trying to kill them for less money than some make back home doing something safe.

Men and women, mostly young who have yet to actually live a life put it all on t he line for people they don’t know and for some who hate them but yet they plod on down dusty roads laden with bombs ready to snatch away what life they have left.

I sat here today for 6 hours looking at the faces and reading what their last days on this earth were like and all were doing their duty to their country and mankind even for those that don’t deserve it.
They live our nightmares and fears for us.

Never let their silence go unheard.

I watched an HBO special about the Doctors/Surgeons/emergency area over in Iraq and was just in tears seeing how EVERY single day there are soldiers brought in one right after another. It showed EVERYTHING! Guys were coming in with blowed off limbs because IED's.Shrattenel(spelling)embeaded in all parts of their bodies because of those IED's.
Ohh man.We have lost thousands of our guys over there and that sucks.I have 2 nephews over there and my sister is just on pins and needles all the time,as all of us are...praying that they both make it home safely.Praying that this death toll would stop period!

Stunning, and heart-breaking to see all those faces, you put a very human touch on this tragedy. I scrolled through and looked at every one, thinking of their loved ones left behind. Thanks for the tribune and the reminder of the sacrifice these brave people have made for us.

Reading this was similar to being at Tyne Cot, the biggest Commonwealth Cemetary in Europe.Situated just outside Ypres in Belgium.
In the memorial there is a film on a loop that just shows the picture and age of every serviceman who died in the battles in the area. all I could do was stare at it and cry. And that was for men who have now being dead 90 years.
Thank you for this horrendous post, it's a timely reminder that nothing has changed except the venue.

Very poignant post Walker and those pictures just break your heart. All so young and cut down in the prime of their life. There are no victors in war, only victims.

Good post. Disagree on "there are no victors in war". Some wars end with a decisive victory.

PBS: I first thought of putting up the names but what are names but faceless words.
So I went through everyothing and got all the pictures to go with the WORDS.

These people deserve to have a face, to be someone not just names on a blog, paper or tombstone..
They earned that right and we owe it to them to remember who they are, what they look like and what they sacrificed.

Fire Byrd: As Canadians, Passendale, just outside Ypres we are reminded the bloody cost to Canadians when they were ordered to hold at all costs against a full out assault, out numbered and out gunned so our allies could storm the town while Canadian forces were being slaughtered.

Even though they were out numbered they niot only held but repelled they enemy and chased them back to Passendale and victory.
The road to this victory left 15,000 Canadian dead and wounded.

TROLL: You're right there are victors when the guns go silent but when we sit back 63 years later and look at the map of the world the lines are back to what they were except for the young men and women who still sleep in the cold ground and in that sense there is no victory, only defeat.
We fight and sacrifice the youth of a generation to keep the status quo.

Your diligent work here is a stark and glaring reminder of the true price of freedom... life after life after life after life... and the families and loved ones left behind... Lest we forget. Very nice. Thank you.

thanks for that post my friend. it was very hard to watch t.v. yesterday and here about all the dead and wounded veterans. i can only watch so much of it and then i end up crying and then i look at mrsh. and she is crying. i think it is our duty to watch and never forget what they go through for all our freedoms. when i am doing some job or any thing i would rather not do i think of the men and women of ours on foreign soils fighting for us. then i ask myself, what are you complaining for.
take care my friend.

Just telling it like it isWe all have to care.
Arganastan has already claimed one member of my family in the last year and there is one there now doing a one year tour.
My best friends nephew is preparing to go on his third tour and he isn't happy about it after what he saw in the previous two.
War is hell and it claims to many young souls.

A great tribute post Walker, its good to see that you were prepared to go to the extra trouble to get photos to go with the names of the heroes.
