What Can Be Said That Hasn't? ©

What can be said that hasn’t?
How can I forget when I am reminded every day?
Every day a soldier dies somewhere to remind us.
He or she could be one of ours.
Maybe yours
Theirs

What can be said that hasn’t been said before?
The war to end all wars
Yet wars go on
Soldiers there be
Fields of dead embrace the land
Marking their place in time but not why

What can be said for the dead that hasn’t been said
The words remain the same
As do the names, row after row
Faceless souls for us to thank for their sacrifice
To fall to our knees and weep at their feet
Weep not for their loss but for the others that they will meet

What can be said that’s hasn’t been echoed through eternity
Only the dead hear the words
Our words
Words we repeat year after year
Words we forget while we remember the dead
Words we say anew when it’s too late

What can be said when it’s too late to remember the words
Lest we forget those who remembered why
Why they traded all they had
All they loved
For a bed of grass
And a blanket of poppies

What can be said that hasn’t been said before

Walker
